– Britain needs to upskill its workforce in order to compete in the global market

John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Life Long Learning, told delegates at the Conservative Party conference that Britain must meet the demand for advanced skills so that it can compete in the global market and continue its economic recovery. He said “Britain’s future lies as a high-tech, high skilled economy”.

We are never going to go back to being a low-skilled economy and we will never be able to compete with the emerging economies on price’

There is a real risk that not only will we be outpaced by emerging economies in terms of low skills, we might find ourselves outpaced in terms of intermediate and higher level skills

Mr Hayes explained that the government was aiming to dismantle the barriers to further education – including the enhancement of part-time, vocational and community-based learning.
