Economy, Welfare to Work

– National Employment falls to 70.6%

Employment levels in the UK have fallen by 0.1% over the last quarter, according to a report published by Office of National Statistics.  The decrease equates to 33, 000 more people over the age of 16 who have not been able to find employment between August 2010 to October 2010.

158, 000 people were made redundant in the same time-frame, a leap of 15, 000 on the quarter. There are 33, 000 less people employed by the public sector, whereas 23.11 million people remain in the employ of the private sector over the pass quarter.

The Employment Minister, Chris Grayling MP commented:

“These figures highlight the crucial importance of the action we are taking to keep the economy moving forward. It’s essential to create a stable environment where businesses can flourish and create jobs – with those on benefits at the front of the queue to take them up.

“That’s why we are increasing the support available to people through both Jobcentre Plus and our new Work Programme which will revolutionise the way in which we help the long term unemployed into sustained employment. Only with a successful economy will we be able to finally get Britain working again.”

Again there is a trend in variance of men and women seeking Jobseekers Allowance. During October and November 2010 there was an increase of4,800 women claiming JSA, whereas the number of male claimants fell by 6, 000.  This discrepancy, when combined with the falling public sector employment figures, will no doubt add sustenance to the notion that women are the primary casualties of the recession.
