Tesco to create 20,000 new jobs.. or is it SPIN??

Tesco, Britain’s largest private sector employer, announced today that it intended to create 20,000 new jobs. A press release by Tesco stated that it intended to

“strengthen its customer service team by 20,000 new recruits… [The] move will be a major step in tackling the current record levels of youth unemployment.”

However there is an underlying question here;

  • are these jobs ‘new’
  • is this merely a repackaging of voluntary full/part-time roles into permanent part/full-time roles?

Sky News, along with the Guardian and Daily Telegraph, has questioned the validity of this 20,000 figure, but Tesco’s UK Chief Executive has, in an interview with Sky News today, stated that

“these are real [net] new jobs, and that’s what we stand behind.” This means 20,000 new roles added to the 578,000 employees currently employed by Tesco.

yesMinister can confirm that indeed these are new jobs… however there is a problem here;

In 2008 Tesco committed and promised to create 30,000 jobs but instead created 11,777… shortfall of 18,223. So yes, these are new jobs but this is also a case of re-announcing a previous target/committment which was missed as if it is a new committment.
