It has emerged today that Downing Street is considering plans to withdraw the right for unemployed people under 25 years old to claim housing benefits, encouraging them instead to move back in with “mum” and “dad”. The housing sector have warned that excluding people under 25 years old from housing benefits will lower their entitlement under universal credit, however housing benefits for low paid workers under 25 are unlikely to be removed.
Housing charities and campaign groups have warned that this plan will place many people at risk of homelessness as not everyone can go back to their parents. A Downing Street spokesperson however said, “that it had only been suggested as a policy and has not gone any further”.
