G4S, welfare to work the olympics.

A POINT OF VIEW

The saga continues. The G4S and the Olympics situation is very complex. It is however unfair to place all the blame on the company and its also unfair to pile all the responsibility of whats wrong with outsourcing at the feet of G4S. The Home Office and LOCOG have their role to play and their responsibility to take.

The director of G4S put his hands up and unlike recent attendees at Select Committee meetings (i.e the Diamonds, the Murdoch’s and others….), Mr Buckles was open honest and very much unrehearsed….

…Anyway….

The issue that will resonate with welfare to work providers are…
a), don’t over promise, and
b), the curse of the DNS

The DNS or Do Not Shows is a problem which has plagued providers and recruitment consultants for ever. Whilst it is less frequent for people not to show up for work – as in the G4S case – the problem is that people don’t turn up for interviews.

However, in this new era of welfare reform where jobseekers are mandated to job search and are expected to take reasonable job offers, increasing numbers of people will turn up for work. However there are those who will turn up for the interview with express aim of demonstrating their inappropriateness for the particular job.

I suppose, unlike G4S, the good thing is that providers aren’t expected to place thousands of people into sustainable work with quick turnarounds and with unrealistic targets … After-all providers said their blackbox solution could deliver… See bullet point A

Peace…
