Should Affordable Housing Requirements be Watered Down?

A new Government-commissioned report stated that attracting a higher volume of institutional investment in the private rented sector could depend on relaxing current affordable housing requirements on new buildings.

Commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government, Review of the barriers to institutional investment in private rented homes, has investigated ways to encourage investors to take more of an interest in the housing construction sector.

Adrian Montague, chairman of the private equity group, 3i and author of the report said local authorities should consider waiving affordable housing requirements where local authorities deem it appropriate.

The proposals have been met with opposition, both from MPs and house builders , who claim the unfavourable mortgage market conditions are presenting a problem without reducing the number of affordable homes available as well.
