The benefit cap

The benefit cap

In April 2013, a cap will be introduced on the total amount of benefit that working-age claimants can receive. DWP has worked with a number of organisations to develop a direct mail letter to tell people about the cap. This was sent to claimants between 20 September and 5 October 2012.

This letter is different to previous ones that claimants may have received about the benefit cap. It contained information about the potential reduction in Housing Benefit if their circumstances do not change before April 2013, within the following bands per week:

  • Up to £50
  • Between £50 and £100
  • Between £100 and £150
  • Over £150.

These bands have been used in line with the averages quoted in the latest

Benefit cap impact assessment.
