– Hansard: abolishment of 192 quangos

The government has announced a significant cut in the number of Quasi Autonomous Non-Governmental Organisations (quango). It has defended its move saying that this would improve accountability and reduce public spending costs.

The Coalition Government will abolish a total of 192 public bodies – such as the
•Firm Council,
•The Audit Commission,
•The Youth Justice Board,
•The General Teaching Council in England and
• The Chief Coroner’s Office

Whilst 118 will be merged. The coalition has announced that 380 bodies will definitely be kept, but explained that the future of others is still under consideration.

.
The Rt Hon Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office Paymaster General, could not confirm how many jobs would be lost through the cuts.

The Labour Party’s Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, Liam Byrne, criticised the government saying that the quango cull could end up costing the coalition more than it saved.
