Tensions heat up between Labour and Conservative over work programme fraud

Following the secret meeting of the Public Accounts Committee in which they heard evidence from a senior auditor (see previous story) tensions between Labour and the Conservatives have been heating to boiling point.

The Committee found that there was instances of fraud at training provider A4e, however no action was taken to stop it.  In response to the Committee’s findings Shadow Work and Pensions Minister Liam Byrne said that Iain Duncan Smith had been asleep at the wheel with the A4e contracts.

Mr Smith argues though that the allegations of fraud go back to the previous administration and has written letters to 11 former Labour ministers who served in his department asking them to release their official reports.

The Department of Work and Pensions yesterday insisted that allegations made by Eddie Hutchinson at the Public Accounts Committee took place under the previous Government.
