TUC confirm Barber's successor

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has confirmed Frances O’Grady as their first female leader.

Ms O’Grady will take over from Brendan Barber as the TUC Secretary at the 144th Congress in Brighton this September.

Despite being relatively unknown outside of the Trade Union movement Ms O’Grady has been a high profile figure within unions and was appointed the first female deputy general secretary of the TUC in 2003.

Commenting on her appointment Frances O’Grady said, “This is a great honour.  Never has a strong responsible trade union movement been so needed.  With austerity policies biting hard and with no evidence that they are working, people at work need the TUC to speak up for them.”
