The number of states schools favouring dropping GCSEs in favour of an O’Level style qualification has increased fourfold in the past two years to 1,170.  Supporters claim that the exam is more rigorous than GCSEs because pupils take all exams at the end of the two year course, instead of breaking the qualifications up into modules.
