Weekly analysis: will Ed Miliband join IDS’s Red Team? That is the question..

The Week that was

Economy
First it was Johnny Major who stated on Sunday that the economy was doing better than many economists or political pundits gave the government credit for. He uttered those immortal words which have caused problems for politicians over the years. Johnnny Maj said that he could see green shoots of growth. The words hadn’t fallen far from his lips when Lord Young, – yes, he resigned 2 years ago for saying that we’ve never had it so go – waded in critiquing and questioning the diligence of the National Audit Office. The truth is; they are both probably right; the economy inevitably will rise out of recession and the longer it takes to rise, the sooner the rise will be spotted on the horizon… “look, it’s over there…where, there, where, there, we are moving in the right direction”. A the very minimum, we can console ourselves in the knowledge that nothing lasts for ever – not even a recession.”Education
In the month when we have had a huge furore over exam results and the recalibration of pass rates to prevent larger numbers of students passing with C grades, we see that the governor of the bank of England has accepted lower results from the chancellor on the state and growth of the economy.  the outgoing governor has exercised leniency on the chancellor: I am certain that The class of 2012 are looking for Michael Gove to exercise leniency in the same way that the outgoing governor has: Go on Govey.Universal Credit Hotline
With all the claims and counter claims that the Universal Credit is over budget, under resourced and unworkable, we learned this week that MPs will have their own Universal Credit hotline… Are MPs now trying to bolster their income and their reduced expenses by claiming for Universal Credit or did I misunderstand?

Ed Milliband could be tempted to join Iain Duncan Smith’s  Red team
Iain Duncan Smith has now established a Government Of All the Talents (GOAT). In his quest to push through with his reform agenda IDS now has a team of experts – referred to as his “Red Team” – to iron out problems in the reform project.. I wonder if “Red Ed is tempted to join it? Or is it that IDS has actually joined Red Ed’s team?

Meanwhile, Nick Clegg is looking for a job, or was it that the Work and Pensions Select Committee said that Clegg’s £lbn jobs plan won’t work? Who knows, it all sounds the same to me.

Have a great weekend
